Diabetic Eye Disease

Approximately 1 in 3 Canadians has diabetes, making it the most common metabolic disorder in the general population.

Diabetic eye disease is the leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults. Untreated diabetes can lead to serious sight-threatening complications, including blindness.

Diabetes can damage multiple eye structures and can cause retinopathy, macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma.

Annual dilated eye examinations are essential for anyone who is diagnosed with diabetes to monitor for any diabetic eye disease.
